OCHLA is now offering volunteer opportunities for dedicated individuals who want to contribute to their community while gaining hands-on experience in public service. Volunteers will have the chance to participate in unique and engaging work to carry out the mandates covered in OCHLA's mission. Additionally, volunteer work with OCHLA serves as a great resume builder and qualifies for college/school credit.
Below you will find a description of a volunteer position with OCHLA. However, it is encouraged that applicants express their fields of interest and come in with ideas of their own. Range of Duties
Administrative:
- Answer phones
- Fax
- Copy
- File
- Label
- Correspondance
- Research legislation
- Assist on press releases/newsletters
- Update databases/website
- Organize legislative files
- Prepare for committee and budgetary hearings
- Accompany staff to represent commission in meetings
- Select news articles pertinent to Hispanic community
- Develop unique ideas to assist Hispanic community
- Organizational skills: ability to multi-task
- Computer literacy: internet, windows, FileMaker, PageMaker, web page, maintenance, word processing
- Dependability: provide office w/weekly schedule, complete task in timely/professional manner
- Spanish Proficiency desirable
- Ability to work minimum of 8-12 hours/weekly (during business day hours) which will be scheduled prior to beginning of each week
- Interest in Hispanic community
- Willingness to work w/variety of people is essential
Nature of Volunteer Position:
The Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs provides leadership in addressing issues concerning Hispanic/Latino Ohioans. The agency serves as a liaison between government and Hispanic communities in Ohio and advocates the development and implementation of policies and programs to address the needs of Hispanic Ohioans, especially, but not limited to, education, employment, economic development, health and housing. Additionally, the commission works to connect Hispanic Ohiaons and the organizations that serve their communities while building the capacity of these organizations to provide effective services.
The Commission is in search of volunteers with an interest in Hispanic issues and state government. A desire to learn more about the Hispanic community and a willingness to work with a variety of people is essential.
